Can I just cover my tattoo with a washcloth if I want to lay in the sun?

That would work, basically the equivalent of having clothing on. Just make sure it's a nice thick washcloth. Do not use sun block until it looks and feels like normal skin--2 to 4 weeks depending on how you heal.
