Extremely dry red eye home remedies?

My husband played black ops on the xbox for 14 hours non stop (stupid, I know), he now has extremely dry, red eyes. He can't sleep. I got him drinking a lot of water and putting a cold washcloth on his eyes. Is there anything else other than fake tears that he can do to help relieve the dry and itch?
