How did shipwreck kelly go to the toilet? or sleep? or even eat!!!?

I heard that Shipwreck Kelly sat on a flagpole for 23 days and 7 hours-a feat that makes no sense to me. Can anyone explain how he managed to eat, sleep, excrete etc?
