Is there anything I can do to help my recently neutered dog be more comfortable?

My 7 month old toy poodle puppy (6.7 pounds if that makes a difference) just got neutered but had a Crypt Orchid (sp?) so the wound is a little different. He has one line on the side of his thing that's probably 2 inches long and sticks out and another little one on the other side that looks fine. That's how it looked when I picked him up, nothing's changed so I'm not worried about that. But he had to get 1 staple put in because the stitches weren't closing right and the skin is red and I can tell it's bothering him. Is there something I could do to make it feel better that wouldn't risk infecting the wound or anything? Like maybe put a cold washcloth on it? Or a warm one? I'm sure it burns/itches, it looks really painful. I've given him his antibiotics and pain killers like I should, but I can tell it's still irritating him and I feel so bad. He's too cute to be in this much pain!
